Why is recycling not the final solution to the problem of plastic?

Zwei gelungene Textbeispiele aus dem Englischunterricht der 3. Klassen im Schuljahr 2025/26

Khawlah Sulaiman, 3a:

Recycling helps, but it cannot fully solve the plastic problem. One reason is that only a small amount of plastic is recycled. Most plastic ends up in nature, in the sea, in the ocean or in trash dumps.

Another problem is that not all plastic can be recycled. Some kinds are too hard to reuse. Also, the plastic gets weaker every time it is recycled, so it cannot be used again and again forever.

Plastic also breaks into very tiny pieces. These tiny pieces are called microplastics. They are now in the water, in the ground, and even in the air. We cannot collect or recycle them anymore.

In the end, plastic never really goes away. It only breaks into smaller and smaller pieces that stay in the world for a very long time. That is why recycling alone is not enough. People also need to use less plastic.

Schülerin der 3c:

Recycling is important, but it is not the final solution to the plastic problem.

First of all, plastic cannot be recycled forever because the material becomes weaker after every process. In addition, not all types of plastic can be recycled, so a lot of waste ends up in nature or landfills. Moreover, people use too much plastic every day, especially for packaging and disposable products.

Another serious problem is that plastic does not disappear. Instead, it breaks down into microplastics, which pollute oceans and harm animals.

Finally, only a small percentage of plastic is actually recycled worldwide. Therefore, recycling helps, but people must also reduce and reuse plastic to protect the environment.
